You know what my favorite question to ask is that helps me find brand alignment?
“Why?”. And I LOVE IT. I love it because that little question can get you digging deep real quick and find answers that help you find clarity and deeper brand alignment with who you are and what you desire.
For example, when it comes to finding focus on your business, many entrepreneurs are distracted by shiny objects like finding the perfect color palette, choosing the perfect font, or updating their website.
Sure, these things matter in some way, but many times these tasks keep us away from focusing on the bigger picture--the things that will bring you significant growth and set you up as a thought leader in your space. When we put so much energy on these tasks and to-dos, sometimes we lose touch with the reason we're going all of it in the first place.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the business to-dos and feel a bit out of touch with your vision, I have some tips for you to help you refocus and realign yourself to your brand. And although this is a good question to regain brand alignment, it's also a great question to help you make the right decisions.
Keep asking "why?":
- Why did you start your business?
- Why is your work important?
- Why do you want to serve your clients?
- Why would people want to work with you? Why not anyone else?
- Why is your story, mission, or message important to share?
- Why not doing anything else? Anything at all.
- Why do you care about your mission/work?
- Why are people attracted to you?
- Why is your business special?
- Why are you doing this NOW?
There are many more questions you can ask (not necessarily starting with "why?") that can lead to finding your why or being more clear about it.
Because being clear on your "why?" should guide everything you do:
When you ask yourself "why?" and have a clear picture of what drives you, you strip away distractions to refocus on what really drives you.
Remind yourself often of WHY you choose to do what you do. Stay grounded and in touch with your mission, passion, goals, and people. That's what's going to come forward in your brand and help attract the right people. Because when you share similar values with someone, you have a deeper connection. It's the same with a brand.
Even when you're thinking of investing in resources like hiring a coach, rebranding, or even saying yes to social commitments—asking yourself "why is this important in my business and how does this align to my big picture?" can help you figure out if what you believe is important actually is, or if it's distracting you from doing the work.
This practice has been a total game changer for me. So much that I've incorporated a lot of these questions into my brand strategy process, where I dig deeper into who my clients are and see how we can bring more of who they are and believe in into their brand. That's really the secret sauce.
When you're aligned to your why, it's SO MUCH EASIER to see what to focus on and say no to what doesn't serve that vision. It's easier to understand who you are and what makes you different and unique.
So go ahead and ask away. I'm confident that asking yourself this question often, will inspire you, motivate you, and drive you forward.
