If you are a business owner, you would probably have struggled with these 2 things in your journey: feeling overwhelmed and distracted.
Constantly busy and out of time, a lot of guessing through things instead of really knowing where you want to go with your business. You set goals that you don't accomplish and then feel like a failure. And then you decide to make a change—maybe sign up for an online digital course or hire a new person for the team. You work hard and try your best to stay motivated, but… it still feels like something was missing. The big picture wasn't there. You ask yourself, what am I working towards? And then the frustration surfaces, the feeling like a failure comes back, and the cycle continues.
Sounds familiar?
What are you working towards?
This is such an important question for every business owner. What am I working towards? If you don't have an answer yet, it would be difficult to stay on a clear path. It would be hard to make focused decisions. Often times, lacking clarity in your vision leads to doings things that aren't impactful for you and your business. It makes you worry about things that aren't as important at the moment for your growth, such as worrying about the color palette of your website when it's really your brand experience that's driving customers away.
Lack of vision gets us nowhere. Lack of vision makes us distracted.
There are so many good things out there: content, courses, communities, tools… the list is endless. However, not all good things will help you accomplish your vision. Initially, you might think that these things will help you fix problems that need to be fixed in the moment when in reality, there's usually a bigger problem that you're not aware of. In fact, most of the good things you find out there will get you more distracted than ever. They take time away from things that matter to your progress.
Have you heard of the shiny object syndrome? This is what happens when we have a lack of focus.
On episode 2 of The Brand Journey podcast, Jo and I talk about shiny object syndrome—why it happens to the best of us and how to overcome it when it strikes. We look at how to find focus when it comes to our long term projects, goals and the things we know will make a significant impact on our business.
If you know where you're going, you can work backwards from the goal and fix your eyes on the bigger vision.
The goal of a vision is to help you build a brand and business that are aligned to the kind of life you want to live. Something that will keep driving your forward with purpose and joy. The vision becomes a decision-making filter that you can use daily to help you stay on track.
→ How will this collaboration help me get to my goal?
→ What difference will this course make to my growth?
→ With the big picture in mind, is it necessary to dive deep on this content now?
Think about the kind of life you want to live and start from there.
Sometimes figuring out your vision seems easier said than done. For some people, this takes a process more than just a few scribbles on a notebook. But even if you don't exactly know what you would like our business to achieve 5 or 10 years from now, that's okay. The point is to think about what you're after, whether that's a specific goal, what your life looks like or how you want to feel.
You can ask yourself questions like these:
→ What brings you joy in your work?
→ What do you want to see happen more throughout your day?
→ What do you want to keep as a priority?
→ What are some habits and practices you are proud to have worked into your life?
→ What would you like to be working on in your business?
If you're feeling like you're still blurry about what your vision is, you're not alone.
In my journey, I had to take some time before I was had clarity on what I am working towards. I had help from coaches, friends, and communities. And most of all, I had to allow myself to reflect and be patient with the process. To not force myself to figure everything out right away, but to answer one question at a time and gain more clarity one day at a time.
You also are allowed to take your time. You are allowed to go in your pace, in your own fun discovery process. That vision you want to have is already in you.
Cheering you on!
